Hello from Kauai, where the Pride of America sailed overnight after two days on Hawaii – the Big Island.

On Tuesday, the port was Hilo, on the “wet” side of the island. The excursion began with a stop at a local cookie and candy factory, where I was able to listen to the same “I Love Lucy” joke made repeatedly. A real Pee Wee touring the Alamo moment 🤣.

The highlight excursion destination was Volcano National Park, home of the very active Kilauea. There were steam vents on the walk to the caldera edge, where Kilauea’s crater sits at a safe distance.

While a bit more dramatic during an eruption when the crater sometimes fills with lava, it was still breathtaking with some volcanic gases escaping at the edge.

Sailing around the big island at night, Wednesday’s destination was Kona on Hawaii’s “dry” side.

A few steps from the harbor, I toured the Hulihe’e Palace, a former royal residence on a very informative docent-led tour. I’ve gained such an appreciation for Hawaii’s history on this adventure, and picked up Queen Lilioukalani’s book on Hawaii’s Story written back in 1898.

When I booked this tour in October, I also booked my next stop – the Kona Brewing brewery tour. I’ve enjoyed Kona’s beers on the mainland for years, and the tour was one of the best brewery tours I’ve experienced. I toured their relatively new and large facility, a short drive from their original brewhouse. An extensive tasting followed in their Thirsty Gecko bar, including some which are brewmaster selection with limited release.

I finished up with lunch back at their brewhouse, a perfect end to a day in Kona and two days on the big island of Hawaii.

4 days later, Kilauea woke up pretty dramatically:
